Morwenna Given practices as a Medical Herbalist in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She is trained to address a variety of illnesses from major to minor but has chosen to focus on MS, cancer, pre cancerous, prostatic, thyroid and diabetic conditions.

Raised, as she was, in a family of conventional healthcare practitioners, it is little surprise that Morwenna’s passions would run toward wellness.  After completing her undergraduate and Masters degrees at Oxford, Ms. Given became one of the largest retailers of Mind, Body, Spirit books in the U.K.

Wanting to explore wellness at an even deeper level, Morwenna returned to university to begin a rigorous six-year journey toward becoming a Medical Herbalist.  The program from which she graduated included grounding in Physics, Biology and Chemistry with specialization in Pharmacology and Phytochemistry.  Much of her course work and texts would be familiar to any medical student.  Her professors were medical doctors, specialists in the biosciences (especially biochemistry) and Medical Herbalists of long standing.

Further training in clinics and cancer centres internationally have allowed Ms. Given to work alongside conventional practitioners, bringing patients the best of “both worlds” in their therapies.

Morwenna has travelled the globe and has had opportunity to view alternative therapies from around the world.  Her scientific, evidence based approach to healing makes her uniquely qualified to assess and comment on healthcare regimes and therapies.

She aims to solve the problem not just address the symptom by using our biochemical knowledge of plant molecules to prevent disease with botanical medicine and medicinal herbs. She recognizes the importance of treating the whole body holistically and every person individually. Our bodies are the physical expression of atoms bound together by molecular bonds. If you disrupt, through disease, any of these bonds then it affects the whole body and the repair has to be for the whole body not just the affected part.

How my process works.

I assess the condition of the patient (diagnose), examine the patient, take a case history, compound (prescribe) the specific plant based medicines, identify the cause of the problem with the objective of resolving it with the plant based drugs on an evidence based basis.

What is a Medical Herbalist?

A Medical Herbalist uses modern natural medicine at its best. It combines the art of holistic treatment and the science of plant healing properties to treat people to achieve optimum health. It is based on internationally accepted scientific evidence and thousands of years of use by the majority of the world’s population. Registered Medical Herbalists are specialists in the use of medicinal plants and their therapeutic activity and do not practice other modalities unless qualified to do so with specific additional training. All Registered Herbalists meet the Ontario Herbalists Association education requirements and must adhere to strict codes of ethics and practice. The OHA is the only body providing self regulated certification for herbalists in the Province of Ontario. www.herbalists.on.ca

Medical Herbalists were originally licensed in the UK in 1542 and the barber surgeons in 1540, sharing the medical knowledge derived from Dioscorides and Hippocrates, the Egyptians and Sumerians thousands of years before the birth of Christ. In the middle of the 19th century that there was a formalized split in the medical world, paralleling the development of surgical tools, anesthesia and synthesized commercial drugs creating the orthodox medical industry of today.

19th century Canada had a fine tradition of Medical Herbalists and they benefited hugely from talking to and treating our indigenous populations. They identified many Canadian plants with medicinal uses such as Echinacea and Goldenseal. This is now supported by scientific evidence in the 21st century through research done by Universities such as McGill and McMaster and others world wide.
